I am so sorry. I knew Charles from elementary school. I remember him wearing a hat in the summer and shorts in the winter. I thought it was the funniest thing ever. He was also one of my good friends and loved his jokes.

I knew Charles all through elementary and Jr High, he couldn’t have been a better friend to me. In elementary I would always get in the bus a few stops before his and I’d run to the back just so I could save him and I a seat so we could talk on the way to school and the rinse and repeat on the way home. We’d always make typical elementary jokes but every single day he’d somehow get me laughing harder than the day before. We’d also hang out all throughout the summers and every time he came over to my house, without fail, he’d have no shoes on or he’d rollerblade and I always found it so peculiar but never said anything and forgot about it after a while because it was so normal. His laugh and general always upbeat happy attitude seemed infectious to me because I could be having a bad day and just sitting with him at lunch would turn it around. We always had conversations about anything we could think of but he would always made them meaningful somehow, he’s someone that I won’t ever forget, especially not the impact he’s had on my life. It won’t be the same without him and he will be dearly missed.

I taught Charles in 5th grade at Kaysville Elementary. I adored him! He had the most fun personality. He was very smart and so fun to be around. He was funny and delightful to have in class. He had the greatest smile and a mischievous twinkle in his eye all the time. I could always tell when he was up to something silly that was going to make us all laugh. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with him and feel blessed to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with you

Charles always had a brilliant mind. You could find the most difficult game in the world and he could spend an entire week studying it and then beat you at it. He was always more driven, more intrigued, and frankly more intelligent than myself. When first meeting Charles, I was just the boyfriend of his older sister, Alaina. He was shy, yet always joyous.
There were many nights Charles and myself stayed up way too late talking and playing online, sorry Martha and Blair for keeping him up. For a long time we would play through Diablo II for a few hours and then share new music with each other for even longer.
It is a beautiful thing to look back at the silly small Charles grown into man that he became. Although we were in-laws, Charles became my own little brother. The time we spent will always be something I hold dearly.
In recent months, Charles had shown me a vast amount of music he would use during his Dungeons & Dragons games. He would spend a lot of time making playlists and preparing just for other people to have a great time. This is how he was in all aspects of life as well. Someone who would go out of their way to make others happy was who Charles always was.
Through marriage I have gained another family. One that I love dearly and my heart aches for them. Our Lord has now received one of the smartest of us all. A bright boy who I felt was an amazing brother, as well as a friend. Someone who had always beat me, even at my own games. Someone who could brighten the mood of any situation. And someone who had a fantastic taste in music.
I will always cherish those late nights of Risk of Rain II and talking about songs. I will miss the excitement from him learning a new strategy game. Through life we find loved ones, and lose loved ones. I know I will see him again someday. I know he is watching over us now and wants us to succeed.

It's only now that I realize that I've never seen Charles wear pants with my own eyes. Always basketball shorts. You would typically see him wearing the grey and red Glacier sweatshirt, or the t-shirt of the tournament bracket of forest animals. Charles was probably the only dude I had fun with during 8th grade, at least during class. The Refugees group chat with Charles, Logan, and I was a blast in Miller's English class. He was a great friend to me and the rest of our friend group in 9th grade. Every day after lunch, we immediately went to the library to play Blackjack. That's all we ever did at lunch, and we probably have clocked in an eternity of playing blackjack and having fun. When we all moved towards Sophomore year, the group missed him very much at FHS, and he left an empty place in the fun. I'll always play cards in his honor and memory. I will miss him very much.

I had Charles in my class three or four times over his growing up years and I keep picturing his eager attentive little face looking up at me. I care about him so much and wish I would have made that known to him more. I love all the Hayes family and fervently pray for your health for comfort and for peace strength and blessings to be given to all of you.
